What is a Level Sensor and Transmitter?


Level transmitters and level sensors are designed to monitor liquid levels in tanks, pipelines, and other process systems. Generally, they can be classified into two types: submersible level sensors and contactless level sensors. MicroSensor offers solutions for both types.

Submersible level sensors and transmitters provide continuous liquid level measurements by sensing the hydrostatic pressure generated by the height of the liquid above the sensor. They deliver output in the form of analog or digital signals. On the other hand, contactless level sensors employ radar or ultrasonic technology to measure liquid levels without direct contact, ensuring accurate and reliable readings.



Hydrostatic Level Measurement Principle


Hydrostatic measurement is level measuring based on the static pressure effect of a stationary liquid. No matter what shape the container is, the static pressure at the measuring point of the container is always proportional to the height of the liquid under the action of gravity. Therefore, the level sensors must placed at the bottom of the container to get accurate level measurements.

How to Choose the Most Suitable Liquid Level Transmitter?


• Liquid Type: Different liquid types have different requirements for materials of transmitter. For example, the acid liquid require anti-corrosive materials. However, the high-temperature liquid require high-temperature resistant materials. Therefore, such as viscosity, density, corrosiveness, and temperature before choosing the transmitter.


• Accuracy and Stability: These are the critical specifications of the liquid level transmitters, ensuing the stable operation and process connection. 


• Measurement Range: Different liquid level transmitters have varying measurement ranges. If the selected transmitter's measurement range does not match the actual requirements, it is impossible to accurately measure the liquid level. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a transmitter with an appropriate range to ensure accurate readings.


• Output Signal and Communication Protocol: Some applications require analog signal output, such as 4-20mA or 0-10V, while others require digital signal output, such as RS485 or Modbus. Types of Level Sensors from MicroSensor

Submersible level transmitters, also known as level probes, are usually immersed directly into the bottom of the tested liquid container. The measured static pressure allows calculation of the liquid level, that is, the height of the liquid column above it. Contactless types include radar and ultrasonic. Radar level sensors send microwave signals to the measured medium surface. The ultrasonic type emits high-frequency sound waves.
